Surface -‐ to -‐ surface correspondence and the frequency code : Explaining differences between expressive and phonological palatalization

43 cases of sound-symbolic palatalization were collected in a typological survey of babytalk registers, diminutive constructions, and other sound symbolic systems. Analysis of the typological trends and language particular examples reveals important differences between soundsymbolic expressive palatalization and phonologically motivated palatalization. We propose that the facts of sound-symbolic palatalization can best be captured with a novel set of surface-tosurface constraints that insert palatal and affricate feature structure. Failure to distinguish expressive from phonological palatalization in this way leads to formal problems and significant loss of generalization cross-linguistically.
